RECAP: Board Reorganization & the Fastest Meeting Ever
Tonight’s Board meetings were short, sweet, and full of organizational housekeeping.
At our reorganization meeting, Board Members Kristi Kristy and John Butler were nominated for Chair. The district votes broke down like this:
Districts 1–4 went for Butler
Districts 5–9 went for Kristy
For Vice Chair, Travis Wright and I (Katherine Bike) were nominated. The split looked like this:
Districts 1–4 voted Bike
Districts 5–9 voted Wright
That means the Board’s new leadership team for this coming year is Chair Kristi Kristy and Vice Chair Travis Wright.
The work session followed, beginning at 5:00 PM, where the Superintendent gave his report. He highlighted the Innovative Schools Initiative, mentioning L&N STEM Academy, Career Magnet Academy, and the coming K-8 school serving Mechanicsville, Lonsdale, and Beaumont.
From there, the agenda moved quickly:
Routine consent items and policies (already reviewed in august Policy Review).
A round of grants (pre-K, school productions, IDEA, and classroom supports).
After-school program contracts.
A year-end budget adjustment.
School nutrition fund balance designation (an annual housekeeping item).
Employee health insurance premium rates (the state set increases, but the board continues to cover ~75%).
And finally, the 403(b) tax shelter plan resolution, which had been discussed extensively in prior spring meetings.
There were no public forum speakers, and the meeting adjourned around 5:20 PM — possibly a record for fastest meeting. Efficiency gold medal unlocked. 🥇 See you on Thursday for our voting meeting! And GOODNIGHT!
